The North Dakota Newborn Screening Program began with screening for PKU in 1964. Since that time, the program has grown to screen for nearly 50 rare, but serious conditions in newborns. Program administration occurs within the North Dakota Department of health through the program director and a nurse consultant. Specimens are sent to the University of Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory in Ankeny, Iowa to be processed. The follow-up of results is coordinated through the Iowa Children's Hospital.
